Wadi Rum

One of the places I visited in Jordan recently was Wadi Rum, The Valley of the Moon, a very impressive set of canyons and mountains about an hour from the city of Al Aqaba and not far from the border with Saudi Arabia.

Well known for its for its relics of prehistoric human culture and its Bedouin inhabitants in more recent centuries, it is perhaps most famous in Western culture as the location where the British Army officer T.E. Lawrence (aka "Lawrence of Arabia") stirred up the Arab Revolt to destabilise Ottoman Turkey during WW1.

Wadi Rum is where Lawrence spent much of time formulating his plans and waging a guerrilla campaign with irregular Arab forces.  It is also where much of the 1962 movie was filmed, as I was able to visit several filming spots.  As you can see it is a remarkable spot and these are some of my pics from my jeep safari which included sunset viewing and dinner at a Bedouin camp.  A wonderful visit.

More Man Cave Adventure pics of other places to follow, but I wanted to post Wadi Rum for a certain follower who I know loves this place.

  3. Hi Paul,

Absolutely Magnificent old chap (and I know I owe you a long email!). The lighting was very kind for your pictures and they really capture the essence of the place. I can almost hear the strains of the film soundtrack in the background....nothing is written except by he who writes it....

I can't thank you enough for sharing this.

    All the best,

    DC
