Stone Circle WIP

This is a my first Pulp/Horror/Cthulhu style game terrain piece and I am trying some techniques which are new for me. I want to create an 'eldritch glow' style effect coming off the cultist symbol on the stones.  Its coming along well, but I'm a bit stuck on how to make it 'pop' just right (and not just look very mossy!) before I do the final flocking etc.  Any suggestions welcomed.

Would more cult symbols on the rocks detract by making it too busy?
Or is the one, single symbol pulsing with evil more effective? ....bwagahahahah!

Oh yes, its a resin piece made by my friend Glynn at Fernvale Scenics

In full lighting:

And in dim, thematic lighting ( we played our last game by candlelight!):

  1. Very cool. I'm leaning toward just the one. Very ominous.

  2. Nice mate, very 'courageous,Minister.." ;) I would say bleindg to a much lighter green towards the edges all around might work...

  3. I like it! Personally, I think "less is more" when it comes to scenery.

  4. Very nice! Perhaps regarding the "coming off of the cultist symbol on the stone(s"), you might try glazing different colors on the lines of the symbols, using acrylic medium, or Future Floor Finish. I've done this on the end of a sorcerers staff, indicating fire, or the magical manipulation of matter.

  6. Hi Paul,

The view with the dim lighting looks really atmospheric. How about using some glow-in-the-dark paint? Or pick out the symbols in a really bright metallic colour?

    All the best,

  8. This is a wonderful looking piece of scenery. I think that just the one symbol is the way to go.

  9. Inventive. Like the idea of games by candle light, wer you able to photograph it and still get the atomsphere?

  10. Thanks for the feedback guys, more WIP shots to be posted shortly.

I'll also do a post about our pulp mini-campaign last weekend, but yes the candlelight worked brilliantly - backed up by an eerie horror playlist on the iPod to generate a fantastic atmosphere as the scenario progressed. It had us all captivated to the end (even the 11 yr old Lad!)

  11. oh one symbol only. Its way more sinister that way. I think you need a bit more green on the symbol itself.

  14. Thanks all! I'm pretty happy with how it came out: usually my vision of what I want to achieve is vastly different to what I end up with!
