Games Day: Zeds and Vikings

Had some of the Lads (Pete, Ken and Steve) around for a Games day yesterday.  Between the brews, chats and BBQ lunch we managed to get two games in:

Dark Age skirmishing action was a LOT of fun - each player had 5 Warriors including an archer.  Mission: be the first to loot the Long Hall in the centre of the table (which I had to get up early to finish painting).  In typical Viking fashion, sharing was not high on anybody's priority list!  Great fun and a full Battle report to follow.
Little Pigs, Little Pigs, Let us come In....
And the old favourite ZOMBIES!!! saw the light of day too.  Steve hadn't played before and we hadn't tried with 5 players before either.  The Lad came a close second but couldn't catch me in the end (first time I've won this game actually!).  The usual backstabbing and treachery ensured fun for all.

We are trying to make Game Days a monthly event this year, so I am looking forward to some varied and regular gaming for once (before I relocate at the end of this year anyway).

In unrelated news, I also got a package from the UK filled with lovely plastic Daleks - thanks very much Steve!  Lots of 'ooh-aah'ing by the boys, and one suggestion to turn one pack into a Dalek Blood Bowl team - which isn't as silly as it first sounds actually...

Married with Zombies

Group North Historical Wargaming Society Open Day

Last Sunday was my gaming clubs Annual Open Day here in Adelaide. The primary aims were to showcase the games the clubs members play and to attract new members. The day was pretty successful in both regards, certainly helped in all endeavours by the various traders we had along as well. The club also ran its own second hand stall from items donated throughout the year by various members. Warhammer Ancient Battles King Arthur rules.... The pics below are from a playtest game using rules developed for these pre production figures by Eureka Miniatures.. The Trafalgar rules have proven pretty popular at the club...here the English Fleet are attempting to destroy the French Harbour..my arch nemesis Greg was commanding the French Fleet, and last I looked was recieving a right proper English spanking... A bit of Fields of Glory action, can't go past some Romans in 28mm now can you? Wings of War in action on a Hotz Game mat...how we marveled as they climbed, how we ooohed as they dove, how we applauded when one chap got cut in half by his own propellor... This War of the Ring display recreated a scene in the second Lords of the Ring movie when the Orcs are ambushed...apparently..I was just bamboozled by the number of (painted) models!! Finishing off with some Wierd WW2 and Incursion love...apologies for the out of focus pic....

World War Z

Just finished reading this novel by Max Brooks and really, really enjoyed it! Its done as a series of short journalist interviews with survivors of a world spanning Zombie apocalypse which almost wipes out humanity.

A great read with lots of subtle political and social commentary.
Highly recommended!

US paratrooper Zombies

Lets face it, most WWW2 Zombies are Germans, but its not a strict monopoly. As Owen told me, those Rooskies have plenty of dead-uns ready for reanimation and undead human wave attacks would be right up their alley!

At his page, Mike has come up with another take on the topic - para-zombies! No more complaining about drop injuries either!

Oz HistoryCon

This Easter weekend saw the inaugural OzHistoryCon, held here in Adelaide. Over 2 days the focus was on historical games, primarily demos, and some traders as well. In its first year the Con was fairly small by other convention standards but was still a great opportunity to see historical games that tend to get lost in the world of mass sci fi and fantasy marketing. That said, there was a Zombie game featured by Grindhouse games called Incursion.... The SHanghai Incident, figues seemed based for Flames of War...
Incursion...Zombies in WW2 uniforms....one for you Z fans..;)
The game...
28mm WW2 using Rapid Fire rules
Not huge, but there were three more traders to the right out of shot. And yes, that is Nic from Eureka Miniatures on the far right :)
