To the Strongest: Punic Wars

Slowpainter John and I enjoyed our first game of To the Strongest this week- club mate Gav hosted us and put on a massive table's worth of 15mm Punic Wars for us. Sporting a few thousand figures it was quite something to behold and shows that even in this day of cheaper plastic 28s, 15mm still has something to offer as a scale in terms of 'the massed battle look'.

Army wise John and I played the Reublican Romans with a core of 4 Legions and 2 Allied Legions, some Allied Cavalry and a small ala of Roman Horse.  Arrayed against us was a colourfully diverse group with everything from Gallic tribesman to Carthaginan Heavy Horse to no less than nine War Elephants.  All laid out on 12 foot or so of table, it was an impressive layout.

Commander of the "COVID 11th Legion" - a resilient fellow!

I've watched Gavin build these two armies over the last year with great interest, and to be honest the odd needling about the extra attention he lavishes upon his beloved Carthaginians :-) Some of the details he puts into the elite units is really impressive.

Carthaginian Heavy Horse with wonderfully painted shields

We used To the Strongest by Simon Miller (of Big Red Bat Cave blog fame) which I have read something of but never seen in the flesh.

There are numerous reviews about the net so I wont go into specifics here other than to say its a gridded game that aims to play big games fast.  While we had a few questions and didnt get everything right, I quite liked the flow, and use of chits to give a 'push your luck - diminishing returns' feel

Elephants advance under cover of skirmishers - very imposing!

At this point I got involved in learning the rules and thus forgot the camera - broadly the Roman skirmishers won the screening battle, allowing the Romans to seize the initiative and start to advance in the centre. Meanwhile the Carthaginians were pushing the cavalry engagements on the flanks were they outmatched the Romans.

Skirmishers and Blades form a barrier to repel the elephants and the Carthagnian centre is desperately weakened

Seizing the initiative, the Legions advance strongly in the centre

One of the things I liked about the setup of the Romans is that each line is a single hit unit, unlike their enemies. However, on activation, the lines can exchange to volley pila from the fresh rank - giving a very thematic feel to using them. In contrast, the Carthaginian units felt more robust but less flexible/trained.

Cavalry clash on the Roman right

Gaul horse finished off the smaller Roman ala

A Roman Legion advances before their flank can be turned, destroying their enemy

Like dominoes, the Carthaginian centre and left flank dissolve - Roma Victor!

It was a simple meeting engagement, but What did I like about the rules?
  • Quick Play, even with thousands of figures.
  • The battle felt like I had Command but not Control, reminding me quite a bit of General D'Armee
  • Liked the chit system (vice dice) for diminishing returns
  • Different units felt and fought differently but without additional complexity
And 15mm offered a great massed battle look...I just don't want to paint them!

That said, I can see that for some ancient types it could bog down quickly where armies are very similar - this had been Gavin's experience to date with linear Hoplite battles. For this and many other periods though, I would be keen to try them again - perhaps with a view to our stalled Civil War project which I am keen to reignite.

Thanks Gavin for the great game and for sharing such a wonderful table and set of armies. Thank you to my Co-Consul Slowpainter John - with our Victory, re-election for next year is all but assured!

June Hobby Round up

June saw my terrain painting focus continue, though we did play a variety of games along the way.

Really visually exciting was this great 40k Necrons v AdMech thowdown with my mate Patch and his 10 year old apprentice Commanders. This was the christening of the big urban battle terrain tiles and I was really pleased with how it all came out, with the colours in both lovely armies really popping on the light and desaturated tiles.

Also played a big game of General d'Armee at club buddy John's house, in which I commanded a wonderful looking French Division and marched it to its spectacular doom while assaulting an allied British and Spanish defensive line

Along the way Reilly did some work on our old Tyranid Army, adding a few more units to the Swarm and pitting them again a few of his University mates.

I also introduced two new gamers to our gaming group and have been playing soem games with them. Markus has a lovely Deathwatch Kill Team and we hav played 2 and 3 playr games of that recently which was fun.

This was the Necron that just wouldn't die - he soaked up 4 flesh wounds and kept repairing the damage! Reilly painted a honour mark on his after the battle

These are my Space Hulk terminators, most decades old. The Blood Angels on the left are from the original metal box release that I got in my University days

Comrade James and I unearthed our classic Terminators and threw down for a few Space Hulk missions. We tried to dial in Reilly (in Sydney COVID lockdown)  to command the Genestealers but we need to work on the tech to enable that better

I also help my mate Gavin start to base his Ancient. Now Gav never does anything by halves, so I'm talking about 500 Spartans, 500 Athenians plus some Cavalry and skirmishers. He is using 32 figure units on 2 bases, and all the figures are painted so we had to work out a way of basing that looks good, is storable, and is easily repeatable.  We potted about for a few hours and settled on this process:

This is the completed test unit on the table and looking the business, arrayed for battle. Gavin has now industrialised the process and I cant wait to see them all finished! He is now muttering about adding another few hundred Thebans to the mx...

And finally, I have been running some demo games of Blood Bowl so we can get a small League running in July. Cant wait!

A return to Mortal Gods...and the Pub!

I'm home in Sydney for the Australia Day long weekend, so a few of us got down to our regular pub for a game and a few beers. Libations were offered to Fortuna to reconsecrate the venue, and then we broke out the first game of the year by revisiting Mortal Gods.

Last year during AHPC X, Alan painted a lovely Thrakian Army but he hadn't gotten it onto the table before last night.  His brushwork in detailing all the cloaks is quite stunning.

The Thrakians as a force are quite different to the usual Hoplite army, and offer a really asymmetric matchup. Their Evade ability in particular makes them very hard to pin down, and they are highly mobile including an Ambush ability so they can appear behind your main line unexpectedly. It will take a bit of experimenting to counter their cunning ways (They remind me a lot of Alan's really bloody annoying Welsh army in SAGA actually...)

Form wedge! Phalanx advance!

We cant kill them if we cant catch them Lochagos!

I was reminded of how much I like this game - relatively straightforward but with lots of depth. I might need to unearth some more figures to paint during this AHPC season

Great to be able to play at the pub again!

AHPC X: Ascending the Snowlord's Peak

Followed by his goatlike sherpas, a sweating Paul reaches the plateau and calls out in a loud and mildly intoxicated voice:
"OI! Hear me oh Mighty Snowlord! I approach your mighty kingdom bearing gifts to honour your Majesty"

A mighty voice bellows back from the distance
"Oh Yeah? Go on..."

Paul empties the last dregs from his ale horn before continuing:
"Yes oh Mighty One, thrice you challenged me and thrice I answer the call!

First - your challenge to build a unit for my Mortal Gods collection. May I present a Musician with taste far gentler than my own - with his double barrelled Aulos he can inspire those who fight in your name!
Presenting a Musician who as a seperate unit in Mortal Gods provides buffing bonuses to Phalanx and Light troops alike. More importantly, last year Reilly and I had an amazing tour of ancient Greece together - we had daily competitions to be the first one to find an "Aulos dude" amongst the various friezes and artwork. So this guy is fun for me because of those memories.

-------
A voice from atop the mountain yells down:
"Well thats OK I guess, but not very inspiring and not a skull to be seen - what else have you got?"

Paul opens the next bag:
"Next I bring as thee Commanded - heavily armed beastmen - they do smell a bit gamey mind, but they will fight fiercely for you my Lord!"

Presenting an elite unit of Bestigors - heavily armoured and wielding powerful double-handed weapons.  They promise to chop their opponents to bits before lashing the bloody remnants to the herdstone.  10 Warriors and a Champion to lead them.

The Snowlord declares: "Thats more like it! And a few skulls too I see - how many?"

Paul: "A mere 20 my Lord, but there is more"

Snowlord: "More? This is indeed a bountiful offering - bring forward the last"

Paul: "I have saved the best til last your magnificence. I have slaved hard at the painting bench with these, crafting them to the best of my ability. May I present:

Kharn and the Kharnivores!

This is my new World Eaters Kill Team - long range firepower is not their speciality!

I did a lot of conversions on these boys, to give me all sorts of weapon options - from double chainswords, double chain axes, combos of both and lighting claws

And to lead them an anti-hero: infamous Kharn the Betrayer!

Snowlord: Very nice - and 64 skulls between them too! Whats that they are standing on?

Paul: That is part of my offering of Lord, the Throne of Skulls!

It boasts an impressive 226 skulls. (amusingly, I had just bought this when I ran into Barks at CanCon - it was hard to keep the inner smile from my face knowing I had this secret weapon for our side duel)

To summarise my offerings: 23 x 28mm infantry models, one standard terrain cube, points for the map location and I do believe, My Lord, you said something about a skull bonus?

Skull-o-meter Overload: 310 Skulls!!!
(This brings my total skull count to 543 metric noggins!)

This bountiful offering was duly rewarded, taking me over the 1k point mark for AHPC 10
