Blueprint for Armageddon

I recently discovered a new podcast titled "Hardcore Histories" hosted by a guy named Dan Carlin.  In particular, I've been listening to his five part series Blueprint for Armageddon regarding the Great War of 1914-18.

Dan uses range of period sources to draw quite from and focuses on the strategic whys of the conflict, and the effects of industrialised warfare at a personal level.  As he does so he draws a nicely logical thread between political decision, economic realities and the frontline serviceman.  While there are things I both agree and disagree with in each 3-4 hr episode, I've really enjoyed it overall and found it most absorbing.

If you are looking or something a bit different to listen to during your commutes (or the treadmill), then I commend this to you.  Oh yes, its free!

Three Die Block shoutout

The Lad was thrilled to get a "Shoutout" from Pauly and Chance in the latest episode of their awesome "Three Die Block" podcast today. He has been emailing them to get play tips and skill-up advice, which has been serving him well.  The guys have been awesome with their encouragement - thanks a lot guys, it meant a lot to him (and me).

Although I'm not so sure about their advice to him to "Keep up the good work, and Kill your Dad's Teams!"....

Gretel von X

Fans of the wargaming podcast 'This Week in Wargaming' would be aware of Ken's recent competition to give away some Gretel von x figures from the Incursion range. Having missed out fair and square, I was rather pleasantly surprised today - I was listening to the latst episode, AT-10 - appropriately while base coating SoTR figs in the Man Cave actually - when I heard at the end that Ken had found another fig and has awarded it to me in recognition of the following composition I made for the comp:

Ode to Gretel
Fine blonde locks and eyes of blue,
a Wagnerian beauty, you know its true.
My dear Gretel, you look so sweet,
I count the days until we meet!
Upon my desk top you will be
and painting projects oversee.
Keeping my models all in line,
enraptured by your features fine.
So treat me with your winning smile,
I promise to make it worth your while.
About you all my friends will rave-
Germanic mistress of my Man Cave!

So my Weird War forces grow and my Germanic horde has a new Command figure...
Many thanks indeed Ken! All I can say is..."Dude!"

So a big Man Cave thanks to Ken and everyone who had d/led this product- hope you enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed writing it! http://thisweekinwargaming.com/

TWIW returns!

For those who haven't heard, the gaming podcast "This Week in Wargaming" is back on the air this month. The previous host "Big Troy" has now been suceeded by Ken Whitehurst of "The Score" fame from the D6G. I'm looking forward to seeing what he makes of this old favourite!

Score on "The Score"

You may know that I'm a fan of the d6g podcast (link on the right side side) which keeps me company at lunchtimes as I walk around the Lake. Great stuff, though its cost me a pretty penny when I have to get the great sounding games they review!

They have a semi-regular section called "The Score" in which Ken details thematic music to game to. This week's episode (37) was by request a Medieval theme - yes, I am the "Paul from Australia" that asked for it.

In reply, Ken came up with the following great suggestions:

Non Nobis Domine" by Patrick Doyle, from "Henry V"
"The Battle" by Harry Gregson-Williams, from "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe"
"Hanging" and "Escape" by Craig Armstrong, from "Plunkett & Macleane"
"The Bridge of Khazad Dum" from "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring"
"Evenstar" from Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
"The End of All Things" from Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, all three by Howard Shore
"Battle of the Heroes" and "Anakin's Dark Deeds" by John Williams, from Star Wars, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Thanks indeed Ken, they will make great music to game to. I'm really enjoying your segment, thanks for all the effort you out into it.

Dice Our Our Vice

Another podcast Ive been really enjoying over the past few weeks is "The d6 Generation", which is 3 guys talking about their games and what they enjoy. They review a game each week in great detail, and have a lot of fun mucking about while doing it.
Another highlight is "When Wives Attack", in which two of the guys' wives (or "gamer widows" as they call themselves) talk about their husband's obsessions. Great stuff.
This podcast is rather long at around 3.5 hrs per episode, but that means it last me a few days of walking around the lake.
Find them through iTunes or at their website here:

This Week in Wargaming

Continuing Comrades James's advice on the utility of podcasts while dragging my butt out for exercise, I've discovered "This Week in Wargaming" (TWiW). "Big Troy" runs his show as a news summary and quick roundup of latest hobby events, usually in conjunction with Zac from the Tabletop Gaming News website.

They steer mostly clear of GW issues (as they say, there are plenty of other podcasts out there who alreday cover that subject in great detail) and instead do generic roundups of all genres. The episodes are relatively short - perfectly timed for the 5 klicks around the lake actually!

And Man Cave inhabitants are (in)famous - listen to Episode 25 (3 Mar 09) at the 10:40 mark.

I've added an RSS feeed to TWiW on the right hand side, so you can easily get to the latest episode. Alternatively, go through iTunes or the website here:
http://samuraigunslinger.squarespace.com/

The website is neat because he posts links to the topics discussed on the show, so you can see the figs and get more info. And they also finish off with a "Zombie Chaser" segment discussing whats new in Zombie gaming and figs, just the thing e Oberst Owen?

I'm really enjoying TWiW and highly recommend it for everything but your wallet!

Solo Wargaming Show

This week I have discovered the "Solo Wargaming Show" (SWS), a podcast by Deano in America.

In his show, Deano goes through a bunch of solo related games, books and reviews. His commentary on the classic Featherstone book "Advanced Wargaming" was particularly interesting as I read that book only last year. Not only did it keep me company as I did walked the dog around the lake, but he raised different perspectives of implementing that book from a solo perspective.

I'm now d/ling more of his shows and look forward to listening to them. You can find the show through the online iTunes stores or here:
