Happy Easter and a Poll

I hope you all have a great break with your families and enjoy some quality Hobby time too!  I'm sure the odd bit of chocolate wouldn't go amiss either!

In the wake of the painting challenge I've been pondering a new gaming genre to get into.  I've done a lot of 28mm skirmish type gaming in recent years, from Blood Bowl, to Dark Ages and SAGA, to Bolt Action and Chain of Command.  I'm still enjoying all of those, but am feeling an itch for more 'grand tactical' gaming with Brigades and Higher Command and Control challenges.

I've put up a poll on the left hand side of the blog, with a few genres which interest me, some for a long period, but which I've not before delved into. I'd be interested in your thoughts and suggestions, not only on what genre but also what rules to look at. Feel free to add other ideas or suggestions in the comments section too.

Thanks and Happy Easter!

  1. Great photo!

I voted for massed ancients. I'm a sucker for anything 'Commands and Colours'- Napoleonics or Ancients in 6mm would be lovely. But it has to be something you enjoy and want to commit to!

  2. I voted Franco Prussion in 15mm as it one I've not seen done much but is one I've always been interested in. And yes, the question of the rules can be a real tough one. Fire n Fury is a good set for Franco Prussian. In ancients would you go the pseudo board game rules of C and C or a truly massed Ancients; Warmaster, Impetus, Comitatus???? Time to scour TMP message boards!

  3. Happy Easter Man, I like you, have really only done skirmish based games on a squad level, so doing a massed combat game sounds like fun, but I would prob go, ACW, Ancients (specifically Rise of Rome, Greece versus Persia or the Punic wars) or AIW, something that can be done on a grand scale, which ever way you go, enjoy mate.

  4. I voted for 1/1200 19th Century Naval - you can't go wrong with 1/1200 Langton models of Napoleonic ships. They look fantastic on the table top and you can game either single ship duels ("Skirmish") up to large fleet actions ("Classic Big Battles"). Of all the items in my collection, my Langtons (and shame GHQ) models get the most comments and attention from visitors

Assembling and painting them can be a bit tricky, but you get the hang of it once you've finished the first one. Rigging doesn't hold up that well on the gaming table so I've learned to go with a minimal amount and substitute very thin brass rod for the thread.

Good luck with your new adventure which ever way you go.

  5. Hi Paul,
massed ancients in 6mm for me too, ever thought about 10mm even? As for rules sounds a bit odd but Double Based Big Battle DBA. Great sized units in 6 or 10mm and the DBA rules when run as big battle can be a lot of fun, also you could think of Kings of War as the rules system at least to start with. I liked Field of Glory for 15mm games but they are a quite a long playing, a game lasts 3 hours or so.

If I had a second choice it may have been 6mm Sci Fi only cos I want to do it too one day.

  6. Hi Paul. I gave my vote for 6mm sci-fi. Not because I regret selling all my Epic 40,000 stuff, but because I have seen all the fantastic options available for if I ever want to get back into that genre. And all the options that are available for some proper combined arms kind of stuff happening on the table. Plus the chance for more realistic tank battles at that scale. And I guess if you wanted some kind of skirmish games you could just focus on mechs and still use the same rules!

  7. Happy Easter mate. What's to stop you doing ALL of the options listed? :-)

  8. What I enjoy reading the most is reports by people who are passionate about the period that they are playing. So if it is a period that I know nothing about, I still enjoy the read when the writer really shows his interest in the period. So my question back is, which one do you like the best?

    Happy Easter.

  10. I voted Franco-Prussian, but no idea of rules. However, the option I would have voted for if it had been listed was SciFi fleet action

  11. I voted Napoleonics with an eye to 6mm. The stuff Ian has been doing at the blog with no name looks really impressive. 6mm Ancients would be a second choice. In the Talomir campaign Ruarigh uses 6mm based on 20x40(?)mm bases using the Rally Round the King ruleset from Two Hour Wargames. What's nice about those rules is that you set the lads in motion and then they react to the enemy, sometimes not how you want.
