Playoffs Round 2: Chaos Dwarves!

Round Two saw Odinn's Champions face off once again against the Hammer of Hashut in a sudden death knockout- only one could go through to the semi-finals!
Mayhem in the opening turns. Comrade James lent us his awesome stadium to play our finals game on - thanks mate!
The pelting rains didn't dissuade the hordes of fans that stacked the stadium and the Norse elected to kick.  But just three turns in a string of troubles had emerged for the Norse, with two players KOed, an Ulfwerner dead (apothecary gave the same result) and the score was 1 up to the Chaos Dwarves.  With two key players missing this game (a Blitzer and a 4ST Lineman) there was no Norse bench and it was getting ugly out there.  The Norse thrower got it down field and the Star Norse Blitzer casualised two Hobgoblins but they couldn't capitalise and the score remained 1 nil a half time.
There was never a dull moment in this game!
The Norse received to start the second half but the rain didn't let up.  They pulled a classic play, smashed a hole in the line and pushing through some players, to rush through a TD with a runner a few turns later after an accurate long pass. The rest of the second half hung in the balance with a scrum developing in the centre of the Norse half and casualties/KOs were mounting on both sides.  As the final seconds ticked by a Hobgoblin scooped up the ball and rushed for the line but desperate Norse defence pulled him down and the siren went with a 1 all draw - Overtime time! (OT is only played for finals games in our league).
Norse Runner Gizar Greyclaw runs a heroic play to save the TD and take the match into overtime
The Norse won the toss to receive in Overtime, but only had 6 players on the field to the Dwarves' 8 and nobody had any rerolls left.  Coach Right Stuff went for a classic elf style play but after spiralling a great pass the catcher  was pulled down, the Dwarves caged up to score in turn 6 of OT and take a well deserved win.
The Norse Overtime play started well with the runners breaking clear downfield, but it was not to be
With this loss Odinn's Champions bow out of the playoffs and the series, while the Hammer of Hushut will go on but down some key players with a skilled ball handling Hobgoblin missing the next game and a star Bull Centaur Armour broken.

The Champions will send Ulfwerner Rodger the Fluffy to Valhalla in a fiery ceremony tonight, but also celebrate skill upgrades for Blitzer Sven Forkbeard (ST boost) and Runner Gizar Breyclaw (Diving Catch)

Quarter Finals Update

The rest of the finals have started in the ACTBBL and here are the results so far from the Commissioner:
Two of the 3 matches went into overtime, only the game between Odinn’s Champions and The Savage Rose was decided in standard turns with a 4-3 win to The Savage Rose despite suffering 6 casualties.  With their first round finals win, The Savage Rose and All French Company have progressed to the Semi’s and due to skipping the second finals round they have recovered their injured players."

So next round will see a rematch of the recent game between the Champions and the Hammer of Hashut!

Spark-tacus!

You may recall that we sadly farewelled our friend Banjo last year (here)
Well this week saw us gain a new companion: a 9 month old Beagle "Spark" who set a new record for falling into the pond (less than 3 minutes) and has already slept in the Man Cave while Right Stuff and I played Dreadball.  Needless to say he is fitting in very well and has already stolen our hearts.

Playoffs Round 1

Its finals time in the ACTBBL, and the system we use is:
1st place plays 2nd place in the other conference
3rd place plays 4th place in the other conference - sudden death

The Elves' Emblem- girly!
This pitted Odinn's Champions against the winner of the other Conference, the veteran wood elves of The Savage Rose.  Luke's team sported some seriously skilled up pointy ears including a 5 Ag thrower who leads the season's completion tally and who has a bounty on his head!  Reilly had a stack of inducements and took a Wizard, a babe, a 100k card and 2 x 50k cards.

The first half was a head turner as the woodies drove a 3 turn TD, followed quickly by 2 turn Norse equaliser.  The Woodies struck back similarly and the Norse were looking good to tie it up 2 all going into the second half when a key fumble gave the woodies the chance theye were waiting for to turn the Norse over and be 3:1 up.  But casualties were mounting and by half time the treeman was out for the game and two elves were dead on the slab (sweet!).

The Norse received to start the second half in the rain and drove down, taking more off the pitch but even 5 elves can be a pain.  Still, they got TD2 in, the elves strike back (the wizard whiffed), and the Norse squeeked through a 3rd TD to loose the game very respectably at 4 to 3.  Satisfyingly, 6 casualties were inflicted including 3 deaths, setting a new Casualty record for the Champions and enabling the Yeti to skill up with Stand Firm.

Despite the loss Odinn's Champs aren't out yet and will face off against the winner of one of the 3rd v 4th place matches (yet to be played).

Champions make the Playoffs!

The last round the season was played last night with Odinn's Champions facing off against an old rival from the Rookie season: the Elves of the Woodland Stryders (coached by Rod, a wonderfully encouraging and friendly opponent).

The woodies won the toss and made a passing three turn play, only to have the Norse similarly strike back with some aerial antics, before the Woodies did their magic again to be 2:1 up at half time.  The last turn of the half saw two elves permanently leave the pitch on stretchers though as the Norse block started to take effect.

The second half saw the Norse strike back quickly ad the Elves reply just as fast- could the Norse get a third TD in to tie it up?  Elves were leaving the pitch in droves to the KO box and the Yeti snapped the Treeman's legs (apothed to badly hurt).  Then in a breathtaking move star Norse Runner Gizar Greyclaw snatched up the ball from two elves and ran into to score in the last turn- 3 all draw!!! The Norse inflicted 3 casualties (nil deaths) taking none themselves.  The draw saw the Champions finish up in 2nd place in the Group standings and confirm their spot in the playoffs!!!
