RIP War Puppy

Faithful companion Banjo at my feet
Long time readers of this blog will have noticed that our faithful hound Banjo the Beagle appears from time to time (like here), but truth be told he is my constant companion and never more than 3 steps from me when I am home.  I am very distressed to announce that he was taken from us last night.  We'll miss you buddy, the Man Cave will be emptier without you.

  1. I'm sorry for your loss Paul. A few years ago now my cat Wilson was hit by a car and the space he left behind in my life was just staggering. He managed to crawl all the way home and laid at my window where he would sit waiting patiently every morning to be let it.

We call them pets but really they're our friends in every sense.

    Rest in peace Banjo.

  3. Totally understand your loss. My good mate Max the cocker spaniel is coiled up faithfully at my feet as I write. When his time comes to part with us I know I'll be a mess.

  6. Losing pets is like losing part of yourself- they are family.
They should live as long as we do. Sorry to hear this.

  7. Sorry to hear about your loss. As a couple of others have already commented, pets are just furrier (feathered, scaled etc) family members.

  11. My deepest sympathies. We had to put down our 17 year old Lab a couple months ago so I know what you're going through. They take up a big space in your heart. If it helps, read this piece by Pablo Neruda - I think he does a good job in capturing the sentiment.

  24. Sorry to hear about Banjo. The loss of a family dog is one of the worse things in life to deal with (short of the loss of a friend or family member). My thoughts are with your family.

My wife and I had to put one of our two dogs that we got from the Basset rescue over 10 years ago to sleep in Aug. after fighting to keep him around despite his medical issues. We still miss him months later....

  30. I'm very sorry for your loss. We lost our longtime (14 years) golden retriever companion recently and I totally sympathize with your hurt. All I can say is that I'm convinced that all dogs really do go to a better place so try to take some solace in that thought. Good luck and best wishes!

  36. Thank you all very much indeed for your kind thoughts and condolences.

We hear so much about the negative aspects of 'social media', but as Alan (aka Dux Homunculorum) and I were discussing last week, the wargaming blogosphere has really generated a great community spirit which extends well beyond just the immediate gaming and painting aspects. At times like these it can really be a comfort.

    Thank you
